Resolution criteria This market will resolve to YES if, between August 4, 2026, and October 31, 2026, at 11:59 PM UTC, the government of the People's Republic of China officially announces or implements new trade restrictions, import bans, export controls, or preferential tariff suspensions specifically targeting goods or services imported from or exported to Taiwan. For the purposes of this market, "new trade restrictions" includes: The suspension of preferential tariffs on additional product items under the Cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) beyond those suspended prior to August 4, 2026. Complete or partial import bans on Taiwanese agricultural, chemical, industrial, or high-tech goods. Unilateral bans or restrictions on the export of raw materials (such as natural sand or rare earths) from China to Taiwan. Formal economic sanctions targeting Taiwanese businesses or trade entities. Exclusions: Sanctions directed strictly at non-Taiwanese companies (such as U.S. defense contractors) for arms sales to Taiwan will not count. The initiation of trade or anti-dumping investigations does not qualify unless actual tariffs, restrictions, or bans are officially finalized and announced within the specified timeframe. Continued enforcement or extensions of trade restrictions enacted prior to August 4, 2026, will not qualify. Sources of Truth: Resolves will be determined by official announcements from the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China (MOFCOM) or official press releases from Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC). In the event of lag or accessibility issues, consensus reporting from major international financial news outlets (e.g., Reuters, Bloomberg) will be used to verify the announcements. Background Economic relations between Beijing and Taipei are heavily shaped by the 2010 Cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA). In recent years, China has increasingly utilized economic leverage as political pressure by launching trade investigations and systematically suspending preferential tariffs on Taiwanese goods. Between late 2023 and mid-2024, Beijing suspended ECFA tariff preferences on a total of 146 product items, including chemical products, lubricants, textiles, and bicycle components. Additionally, China has historically imposed temporary import bans on Taiwanese agricultural products, such as pineapples, citrus fruits, and seafood, citing pest or contamination concerns. By mid-2026, Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council reported that Taiwan's economic reliance on mainland China had fallen to historic lows, with ECFA-covered exports reaching record lows. As regional geopolitical and trade tensions continue to shift—marked by new global tariff waves and heightened gray-zone maneuvers—traders are watching to see if Beijing will implement another round of trade restrictions to exert pressure on Taiwan's administration.
